Kurds received harsh treatment at the hands of the Turkish authorities for generations. In response to uprisings in the 1920s and 1930s, many Kurds were resettled, Kurdish names and costumes were banned, the use ofwel the Kurdish language was restricted, and eventjes the existence ofwel a Kurdish ethnic identity was denied, with people designated "Mountain Turks".

In een volkstellingen tot 1965 werden een etnische minderheden betreffende Turkije geregistreerd. In de jaren dertig en veertig werden de Koerden daarbij als "Bergturken" (dağlı) geregistreerd. Sommige Turkse taalkundigen probeerden - betreffende officiële steun met een Turkse overheid - zelfs met te tonen dat het Koerdisch een dialect zou zijn van dit Turks.[12] In een jaren tachtig werden ons nieuw eufemisme bedacht wegens de Koerden; ze werden sindsdien geregistreerd wanneer "Oostelijke Turken" (doğulu). In late 1931, Ahmed Barzani initiated a Kurdish rebellion against Iraq, and though defeated within several months, the movement gained a major importance in the Kurdish struggle later on, creating the ground for such a notable Kurdish rebel as Mustafa Barzani.[citation needed]
